type 80 vs 83 vacuum tubes
can a type 83 full wave mercury vapor rectifier be used in place of a type 80 full wave vacuum rectifier, if not what are the differences. I have an 83 and a radio that needs an 80, can i use it?

Re: type 80 vs 83 vacuum tubes
In a word NO.
The 83 draws more filament current, has less voltage drop and the ionizing action causes RFI, a conventional filter circuit without RF chokes would cause noise in an AM radio...
80's are cheap unless for a cosmetic reason a 280 "S" bulb (globe or balloon) is desired.
The 83 is commonly used in a few tube testers because of the regulation and low voltage drop the ionize mercury cloud provides.
