What can cause a 5Y3GT full wave rectifier to vigorously heat up, throw sparks then glow purple all in about 10 seconds?

Shorted electrolytic capacitor more than likely.

Filament sagging onto a plate?  I've never witnessed this, but there's a rule that, for sideways mounting, the filaments "V's" should be vertical.
