GE J805 Help?
Ok, so I've been working on this old GE for a few weeks now and it's looking good. Can someone tell me about the cylindrical cardboard antenna deal in the back of the unit? (Dual Beam a Scope???)
Is this for the short wave frequencies? As you can see the tube is in bad shape but the internal copper coil antenna is in great shape. Is it necessary for regular broadcast frequencies and can I re-install some how without the cardboard tube? Any help is appreciated!!!

Yes, it appears that the Beam-O-Scope is for all bands. It also couples an outdoor antenna to the same bands.
So long as the outer cardboard does not hold the works together I guess it could be removed. If the cardboard is foil covered then it also acts as a shield. If so, there should be a gap in the foil.
Possibly the cardboard could be removed and patched from the inside and returned to the loop.
BTW all the coils within the Beam-O-Scope are specific, to replace them with some sort of ferrite coils will require advanced engineering. More practical to patch it up than to re-invent the wheel...
YMMV

Isn't that bass fantastic?? Rattles my living room windows. I can feel the bass on the other side of the room.
