General Radio 1001-A
General Radio 1001-A
Hello everyone. One item the club has is a General Radio 1001-A. While I haven't opened it up yet, all front knobs seem intact. I am seeking advice/suggestions on testing and verification that it works. Thanks!!

Re: General Radio 1001-A
I have had my General Radio 1001-A for some 35 years...
Here is what I have learned.
There are a couple of electrolytic capacitors that may need changing, yet, the ones in mine are still O.K.
Be sure the correct tubes are installed.
If the audio oscillator is not working change out the caps, use stable foil/poly caps.
Calibration is off on some bands can be brought in by the use of ferrite to load the offending coil.
There are "N" to "UHF" adapter connectors.
Some 1001a's were factory equipped with UHF connectors.
The RF connector is part of the sealed attenuator compartment. Tinkering inside to swap a connector may effect how the calibrated attenuator works.
The output is HUGE a 10-25' length of wire in the RF output can deliver a signal for at least a mile...
Audio input can achieve 90% or better modulation if a 6 to 10:1 audio interstage transformer is used.

Re: General Radio 1001-A
I have one that I got from a fellow on ARF, said it worked but failed to mention only on two bands. I opened it up and was very clean inside so not smelling a burned component, I plugged it in and results of output were disappointing. I would rotate the frequency selector and some bands had no output.
I opened the generator back up and cleaned the rotary contacts on the drum. using isopropyl alcohol and Q-tips. then I applied cramoline with a toothpick. Now works great but is a dust collector, cause it's too heavy to move. LOL
The frequencies are spot-on using a frequency counter.

Those were special orders. The stock 1001-A used GR 874 connectors.Chas wrote:Some 1001a's were factory equipped with UHF connectors.
Thoroughly verifying proper operation requires a well equipped bench. A few years ago I restored my GR 805-C, big brother to the 1001-A:

A properly functioning 1001-A is overkill for antique radio repair, but is a joy to own and use.
