MY FIRST TUBE AMP BUILT FROM SCRATCH
MY FIRST TUBE AMP BUILT FROM SCRATCH
Hello to all -my first tube amp build --not pretty but sounds great.
I always wanted to build a HeathKit amp but could never afford the kits when they were being made,
so I decided to build one from scrap parts --so here is the result --
6l6 push pull ultra linear using three 6np2 12ax7 clones from Russia
one for phase splitter and one for the tone circuit and one for input amp
has bass and treble controls and great sound and volume -
I amazed myself that it even worked at all.
but I am a happy camper.

I've heard this amp play and it sounds great. Not bad for three weeks of work in the evenings. Hardest part was getting the tone and bass response correct.

I'm impressed. I have problems getting factory-made amps to work. Good job.

Re: MY FIRST TUBE AMP BUILT FROM SCRATCH
I'm also impressed. Gary. Just wondering why that one 12AX7 isn't in the socket. I heard it on the phone, and, it sounded great. Your capacitor leads are short, as they should be, and, while not up to factory specs, is, none the less, well done. And, I think you did a great job.
Congrdulations on a job well done.
I've seen much sloppier work done on factory equipment by RCA Victor.
John Folsom has a very rare combination projection set by RCA Victor. The only thing made by them was an upscale projection unit that showed a very big picture on a front mounted screen. The radio, and, amplifier were made in England.

And, you should see that radio. AM-FM. Very tight parts, a lot of inside shielding. Nickel plated....

Re: MY FIRST TUBE AMP BUILT FROM SCRATCH
Thanks Guys for the kind words----Bill I put in 4 sockets and wired the filament lines
when I started and later found that only 3 were needed so I left that socket empty.
I know it is not all neat and pretty like most guys on here do -but for my first attempt I'm happy.

Re: MY FIRST TUBE AMP BUILT FROM SCRATCH
Nice work. I have wanted to make my own for a while but haven't had the time. Did you use a diagram or calculate it all on your own? I thought about finding a diagram then reproducing it. I think the amp work I have done in the past that the controls were the biggest pain to do. You have to adjust then fine tune caps and such was my expirence. Some guy I have heard about custom builds these amps and sells them for over 1k each outside of Nashville. From what I have been told he has a backlog of projects to do. I need to build one myself.

Re: MY FIRST TUBE AMP BUILT FROM SCRATCH
thanks, I used lots of schematics I found on line --parts from eBay I copied bits and pieces from
power supplies and output sections I made it ultra liner so the output transformer supplied the plate and screen voltages to the 6l6 tubes - I used 6n2p Russian 6ax7 tubes for tone and input
believe me a amp can make some awful noise (the dog ran to hide in the bedroom)-when caps are hooked up to the wrong pin of a tube lol--but I had lots of fun -did not burn up anything and learned a lot --I am in no way a tube expert and a lot was trial and error--
some of the guys on another forum said it is biased wrong --but it plays well and does not red plate the tubes..if I can find another junk chassis with the holes for tube sockets I may try another some day. thanks for all the support
