Well, bad luck happened. At ten am mandrel was nearly straight. At five o'clock, it was wobbling wildly. Not good. Talked to our friend Tony, and, he says it sounds like metal fatigue. No guarantees, but, it looks like it to me, also. I'll have to look for another mandrel.
Phooey!

Hmmm.. Now, I'm not so sure. It is now straighter. I might not have been bending the shaft as well as I had thought.

Mandrel is still bouncing, and, motor got louder.I put machine back together, and, for the first time, ever, I put the blue horn on. Yesterday, volume was low. Today, it's louder.
Still some bounce, though....

Thank you. I don't know why you would have. It physically is in beautiful condition. It now plays, though still needing further work....

Re: New toyz............ Photos on the way.............
I think I finally have mandrel shaft nearly straight. Machine plays well, though still not loud enough.
Motor can barely heard.
Not bad for a 100 year old machine.
It plays three blue amberols on a winding.....

Re: New toyz............ Photos on the way.............
Mechanical problem solved!!!!!!!!!
I worked on bent mandrel shaft more today. Used the eyes from a friend to check it out.
It has got just one tiny bounce left, and, I'm leaving it alone. Records play nicely with good sound.
Next step is to finish the cabinet work. Then, completed machine will go to another room to enjoy it.

Re: New toyz............ Photos on the way.............
Still no luck. Mandrel is still slightly bent, and, belt is slipping. Need to shorten it. Reproducer is much l0uder. I replaced original horn bracket because it was highly rusted....
Been busy. Hope to work on belt tomorrow morning.

Re: New toyz............ Photos on the way.............
I worked on the belt, which is now doing well. I kept working on bent shaft, and, the bounce is nearly gone. However, Now, when you pick carriage up, and, put it in the non playing position, without half nut touching the feed screw, it is much worse about needle playing the record because something just isn't right.

Re: New toyz............ Photos on the way.............
Still am working on the Edison Standard. Mandrel shaft was badly bent. I had been going through the mandrel to find bends, and, wonderiwng why my adjustments were making it worse. This morning I discovered the reason. Somebody had tried to break it loose by banging he mandrel with his tool. It got bent. Now, I'm watching the bend closely on the center shaft. Finally, it's improving.....
If I get time this week, I'll take pictures of it here, and, ask someone to post them for me....

Re: New toyz............ Photos on the way.............
Well, I've finally done about all the work on the mechanical aspects of the standard. The mandrel shaft was extremely bent. The mandrel itself also has some dents in it, which don't help a lot. This machine was battered.
I have got very little gear noise, and, you can hear some gear noise out of the governor. I still have to work on the rest of the machine. All, in all, it's playing better. It still doesn't like to start on it's own. I suspect the main spring was wound up tight for many years, ad, got somewhat weak. Still a slight bounce, also. The reproducer has it's issues, also. Machine is getting louder out of the horn every day. Reproducer needs rebuilding, though. Needle is good. The reproducer is a rare model N.

Re: New toyz............ Photos on the way.............
I now have the standard on proud display in my music room.
Looks nice, and plays beautifully. I've got the Gem back on the bench to replace the broken main spring.

Re: New toyz............ Photos on the way.............
Found the problem that caused spring to break.
First gear off bull gear is no longer holding to whaft. It allowed motor to go on free spin, and, spring broke. Also, some damage was done to winding check gear. a few of the gear for spring back wareds not to happen also has some damage.
I'll have to find parts for this Gem machine.........

Bill, I thought that attachments were disabled on this board? You might have to upload your pic's to a photo hosting site and then link to them there instead of trying to upload them as attachments from your computer?

Re: New toyz............ Photos on the way.............
I lucked out on ebay. Lost the chance to win the rare rproducer for my Edison Diamond Disc A 150 machine.
But, I bought the bedplate, and, horn for same. The paint on both is very good, and, it seems to have a quiet motor. It has 98 percent perfect paint, pin striping, and, horn. Main spring is good. I can hardly wait to switch parts. My motor on the Bailey Teeters Machine is badly worn.
The mechanism on this one is complete original.
I'm glad I've got it.

Re: New toyz............ Photos on the way.............
More good news... I just purchased a basket case rare Model c Edison standard. They onl sold in NY state due to patents that Columbia held on the open ended mandrel. When Columbia let go of the patents for that, Edison came up with his own version of the the open ended mamdrel.
The model C was the first machine that had it, and, the last machine with only a two minuite settin.
It arrived this afternoon... Ah......A new project. I'll have 11 cylinder phonographs......
