Electric fan forum
Electric fan forum
I was bored the other day and Googled "Antique electric fan forum" for grins and giggles. I found this forum:
http://www.afcaforum.com.
Do any of you guys have experience with this group? I have several old fans, and what they do looks like fun.

Re: Electric fan forum
"Mix'n" costs $45. Not a free forum, you have to join the Antique Fan Club of America, or whatever. They should be nice if they charge to join! I'm thinkin', I'm thinkin'.

Re: Electric fan forum
That doesn't look worth $45 to me. Did your A/C guys recommend the site to you?

Re: Electric fan forum
The thing that impressed me most was that a guy on there repops fan badges. I have some in bad shape and I'm glad to know new ones are available. I have no idea as to cost, however. The only thing I have seen so far that concerns me is that people use their real names as usernames. I'm not sure about that yet.

All kidding aside, You will be the best judge as to whether the registration fee is worth it. Read all you can then decide.

Re: Electric fan forum
I found a way to register without paying. They still want me to use my real name as a username. There are too many kooks in the world for me to be so trusting, especially on a site where I don't know anybody. I could use a fake name, but that could rear its ugly head in a most unfortunate way. I have never heard of a forum where you have to use your real name. This may be the deal breaker for me.

Re: Electric fan forum
I found another forum:
http://www.dtvintagefans.org
You still have to use your real FIRST name, but your last name initial. What's with fan forums, anyway? Have they never heard of identity theft? This forum does not appear to be as informative as the first one. There are a lot of plastic fan fans here, not my cup of tea.

Re: Electric fan forum
I've heard of the first forum you mentioned, don't know a lot about it or belong to it. However one guy from the ARF is on it, Nick D aka Nick Denny. He restores fans all the time though. I've read some stuff on there and it's very informative but it's more for the ones who restore and collect that type of fan. However that was probably 4 or 5 years ago.

Re: Electric fan forum
I have something like 38 or so old fans, some I have fixed up, some are original, some are pretty much junk. I knew Nick D. was a fan guy, but I have never seen his work. I have found out that, unless you are a dues paying member of the Antique Fan Club, you cannot post or contact members directly. I'm not sure I'm ready for that.

I think what I am going to do is to lurk on the fan forums and find a parts guy for badges, cord and things like that. Maybe ebay?

Re: Electric fan forum
Nice collection of fans and radios. I think he has some posted on facebook, in his photo albums. If i've seen any of his fans, it's been awhile. There is another fan guy, his name is Jonathan Morris. I'm not certain if he is on this forum or the ARF. He was in one of the radio groups on facebook. IDK if you do facebook or not since I don't know your real name.

Re: Electric fan forum
Hams have been using their real names and addresses for more than a hundred years. It's unfortunate that bulletin-board software was developed by kids using their school's equipment after hours, or no one would think anything about it.

Re: Electric fan forum
The risk of being considered "juvenile" notwithstanding, what hams do does not necessarily reflect reality for me. The modern world is full of threats from sources unknown. The potential for giving someone with too much time on their hands more ammunition for mischief is not something I am comfortable with.

Now I have. I won't find the solution until I ask the question. Thanks, 75.

Maybe we could join the Rockford Files fan forum. Two hundred a day plus expenses.
