SUN MODEL G 696 I NEED A METER
SUN MODEL G 696 I NEED A METER
I am trying to restore this Sun dwell meter. The dwell meter on the left is shot. It is a shot in the dark to find one.

Re: SUN MODEL G 696 I NEED A METER
Those automotive test equipment manufacturers customarily had the meters made for production runs and spares, and that was it. If they were an off the shelf meter from a manufacturer like Simpson or Weston, there would be a fighting chance. I would search on Ebay for parts or a parts unit. I have a much later sun consumer type meter.

I see the affected meter has a model number. I can't see it, but try some searches online and on ebay using that number also. You never know what might turn up.

I will get the number and give it a try. The spiral spring on the top of the movement is gone. I'm good but not good enough to try and replace the spring. That will be a last resort.

probably easier to find another whole unit, part yours out? I'm pretty sure Simpson is the maker of the meters under contract with Sun. You might try one of the garage forums, there are a few there who collect / restore old sun testers(I'm one of them)

If you can't find one I wonder if you can find a similar meter like this made by simpson. Then just replace the back piece that says dwell angle to the donor meter.

Re: SUN MODEL G 696 I NEED A METER
I have a Sun automotive scope with a 19" CRT in it. One of the first models with an infrared bench in it. The infrared needs calibration and Sun wishes me luck. They will not touch it. I probably need to see if I can find a manual for it and see what ails it. It must have 50 tubes in it and is fan cooled. It is on wheels to roll around the shop. I got it from the shop that bought it new in the late 1960's.

Wildcat did you get it calibrated? I had 2 1115 with infrared ex analyzers. neither would calibrate. My cousin was running a 1015 with external analyzer, calibrated by Sun monthly. So took the covers off, one was dirty as heck(cleaned it) the other was clean but the hoses were broken (replaced them) So when he had his calibrated I took a 67 mustang and used it for the test. Came home ran both 1115's and they both were right on with the calibrated one. Sold one to my cousin's buddy for a nice profit and he was so happy. These were 2 gas testers.
