Re: isolation transformer
I bought an isolation transformer/Variac at a junk store a while back for $8. Look in unlikely places. The guy at the junk store did not know what it was, so he sold it cheap. After I paid for it, I educated him. He was not too happy. They are out there, and you will find one when you either are not looking, or when you have no money on you. Good luck.

Re: isolation transformer
Got mine at an estate sale of an old radio guy. The person running the sale had no idea what it was worth. Got it for $15.00.

Re: isolation transformer
depends on how old. If it works, no!
For practice just get a not so old tube radio that doesn't work and practice soldering on that, that way if its not a collector type then you won't devalue a keeper.

Re: isolation transformer
Bennie, EVERYBODY on here was a newbie at one time. If you use common sense and ask questions when you get stuck, you will do just fine. There is no such thing as a stupid question. Feel free to ask away. We are here to help and are glad to help. I would not fix something that is not broke. Check resistors for out of tolerance. If they are okay, I would leave them.

Re: isolation transformer
Bennie, just post an add for wanting to buy an isolation transformer here. Someone will come through. When I was first starting I did the same on another forum and a member offered me up a like new one for free, just shipping. We all like to give back to the people new to the hobby.
