Bill, could you use one of those headlight polishing kits you get at auto stores? I got one for my headlight. My car had one headlight replaced before I got it. The original was yellowed and milky looking. I got one of those kits and was thinking it was a waste. I was afraid about half way through that I had messed it up since it was worse to see through but the kit said it would. By the time I was through it was as clear as the new one. I was really shocked. I used the kit on my daughters two headlights and they got really nice. If I had one I would probably try that. From doing it the kit looks like it takes off the top roughed up layer then you polish it out to like new. The kit I got was a 3M kit and they have it on sale often at advance auto I go to.

Actually, I used brasso, which took out the yellowing, and, the lighter scratches. I may use it again.
Keep an eye out. I am going ahead with the rebuilding project.

I have a 3"X6"X1" square of flat plate glass that I use with wet or dry sandpaper of 600 to 1500 grit to wet sand flat acrylic, bakelite or even stainless steel. It's what I used on the RCA 75X11 pictured on another thread. When it comes down to putting a gloss on the work, I use newspaper coated with brasso.

Well, I was finally able to get back on Admiral tonight.
I have now replaced a total of 5 capacitors, and, 2 electrolytics from C1, so far.
Alot of work, but, made headway, though.
Well, slowly we are making headway.
Next time I'm on it, I'll do the last electrolytic in C1, and, continue replacing capacitors.
I'm heading to the horizontal oscilator, now.
Haven't touched the sync circuits yet, nor anything else. I also have to re wire audio circuit.

Well, I figured it would happen, and, sure enough, it did. The pin with many parts on it on horizontal output broke while trying to unsolder parts.
I was able to replace the pin. I had it wired up, this time with insulating sleeves, and, soldered. However, when I got it back together The two watt resistor fell off. Apparently, the solder didn't reach that Other than that, it's coming along. I have to redo that resistor, then I can continue. I already finnished the last filter in the first can. I replaced The wire going to the fuse.

At least I'm making headway.........

Well, the two watt resistor kept on not soldering back on replacement socket pin. I finally got it soldered, but, then had a nasty solder run I had to be rid of... Wiring is alot closer than I like.
Then, a mica cap broke loose from oscilator coil, so, I have to figure out which pin it goes to.
Then, I'll eye it with a fine tooth comb, again. When I'm certain I'm o.k., I'll go onto next circuit.
The damper. By the way, I think Horizontal Output tube is also bad.

Finally got the resistor soldered. I finnished all work in those sections, including the bypass capacitor on the horizontal osc. coil, and, horizonttal output coupling.
Next, on to the damper caps., then, after that, the next batch of electrolytics, and, capacitors.
That will be including the audio circuit.
Progress is doing better, now.

Interesting.... I just noticed in the pictures that two of the channel strips don't end with a vhf channel number, and, the rear one has four adjustment screws. UHF?

Bill, That Admiral chassis is coming along nicely. Admiral sets have long been one of my favorites. Love the tuners, and the chassis is reasonably easy to work on. Great performers once they are restored.

Thanks, guys. Just looking at the pictures, looks like the audio output socket is trashed. I'll have to look into that.
May have to replace it...
You know, when I first started replacing caps I went by what was in there. I'm not so sure that was a good idea, now. I just found out that one of the damper caps. that was supposed to be a .035, I used a .033, had a replacement with a .005 instead!
This set was a real mess!!

Poor old thing probably went through repair by someone trying to cut a corner to save a buck... and their continued employment. That usually works out to be a wash in the long run.

Yeh, this set saw a very hard life.

I'm worn out. I've now got the audio output connected. I only have to connect the blue plate wire to the speaker socket pin.
I then have to replace coupling caps in entire ardio circuit, and, everything else.
Officially I have to re cap audio, sync, vert. and, video am circuits....
I also have to replace defective vert. lin. control.
In the end, I'll clean tuner contacts.....

Well, I've rebuilt, and, repaired audio circuit. I still have to connect the blue plate wire to speaker socket, but, I've done the rest. I've now replaced on paper cap on sync, and, I have to replace ten more paper caps., and, One can consisting of three filters, and one fifty volt electrolytic on audio det. circuit.
I'm making good headway, now..........

More problems. Last night, I decided to bring set up to a very low vlotage on variac to make sure all circuits were getting voltage. They aren't.
First filters from first can are great. Third filter can filter replacements are likewise great.
The bad news is the seond filter can with the filters that run the damper, and, vertical output is dead on arrival. Not one volt.
I have been trying to trace to find out what's wrong.
Looks like the guy did more dammage than I had thought.

To top it off, my brand new Chinese terminal strip, one lug flell off. Not groke off. FELL off! I had to re do the strip with those filters.
Darn, darn, darn, darn, darn! as Herman Munster would say.........
This is going to be a long project.

It appears that the B+_ supply for the vertical output tube is fed from B Boost (damper tube) through resistor R77. Is there B+ on the damper tube plate? C67 and 68 replaced? Linearity coil OK, fuse M4 OK?

Yeh, I was wondering about the fuse myself. They had blown it once, as it is.The horizontal out. tube was trashed. It might be blown.
This clown really messed this thing up....
Boost, and, the filter negative connects to B-? Must not be a real high boost.
Height control is on regular high B+.

That's unusual. It's usually on boost.

I was sleeping most of the day. Hoping to get back on it tonight.
Hmmm. Works off boost. That would likely mean it won't do anything until the damper startw warming upl Set isn't ready to put that much voltage into, yet. I have replace last two hv caps in C2. I still have to replace cathode bypass for audio out. and, bypass cap for aud. det., plus, 9 more paper caps.
I've just been checking as I go along at very low input voltage.
This set isn't ready to put full line voltage into, yet.......

After making three minor mistakes, I finally replaced last set of main electrolytics.
I have nine more pieces of paper to replace on it.
Boy, this set has been interesting, so far.......
It's better than it was. I'm definately glad I have the junker to steal parts out of. That included the vert. Lin. Control.

I was under the weather yesterday, so, nothing got done. Today, I feel better, and, will be getting back on the Admiral. I have replaced all, but, one small electrolytic feeding the audio det. I'm waiting for a replacement to come.
Today, I hope to finnish re capping it, then, continuing voltage checks. Before I go too far, I do want to see what it is going to do. I haven't had the variac any higher than about twenty volts, so far.
No more than 15 volts B+.
So, I have no idea what it''s going to do, yet.

Is anyone still reading this thread? I've seen no response in two weeks. If I don't get any responses, it will mean to me that no one is interested anymore, and, I will stop wasting our time.

I'm reading it! And it may seem like it has been two weeks but it has been only 2 or 3 days. That is one reason the 'like' feature is a handy one. A person can then leave notice that they have been following a thread.
